American football in Kuopio

The Kuopio-based American football team Steelers started in Varkaus in 1991 and moved to Kuopio in 2006. The men’s team of the club competes in the highest level of American football in Finland, Vaahteraliiga. Steelers claimed the Finnish championship title after their victory in Kuopio in 2022!

In addition to the top-tier team, Steelers also has a men’s second team, the Flying Fishcocks, which includes Kuopio, Kiuruvesi and Iisalmi. Furthermore, the club has a women’s team established in 2013, competing in the 2nd division, and representation in various junior leagues.

The home stadium for the Steelers is Väinölänniemi Stadium, located near the center of Kuopio. The stadium has been in operation for 100 years, and it can accommodate approximately 2,700 spectators in the covered stands.
