The beauty of shopping

Shopping in the Capital of Lakeland is unlike shopping anywhere else in the world. Fashion, home decor, art, delicacies, and treats abound, all to the vivid backdrop of the lakeland region. Shopping days also offer entertainment, inspiration and memorable moments with friends and family, or an enjoyable day to yourself.

Kuopio city is big enough and small enough to be both fascinating and comfortable at the same time. Most of the city center’s shopping spots are within the walking distance and you will find smaller independent stores and larger shopping centers. If you are in Kuopio in the summer season, a must visit is the Kuopio marketplace. The marketplace is bustling with people, joyful chatting, flowers, berries, vegetables, local pastries and much more.

The largest shopping center in Eastern Finland, Matkus Shopping Center, is located about five minutes car drive away from Kuopio center to the south and is definitely worth a visit. There are dozens of specialty stores – fashion, sports, cosmetics, children’s clothing and toys, home decor and much more. The center also has several restaurants and cafes as well as an Ikea under the same roof. Matkus is known for its family friendliness with plenty to keep the entire family amused. 

In the city center, just a stone’s throw from the marketplace, you’ll find the idyllic Pikku Pietarin torikuja, where small shops are filled with gorgeous handicrafts, gifts and household goods. In addition to the shops found in the barn buildings, the market lane boasts a charming café with its terrace. Pikku Pietarin torikuja serves visitors during the summer and Christmas season.

Parking in Kuopio is simple and all shopping areas can be easily reached by car. The recently renovated underground car park under market square can be easily accessed from highway five. Shopping centers situated outside the city center all have their own parking places, usually free for charge. Nearby shopping centers are also easy to access by bus. For more independent shopping, Tahko and other places nearby to Kuopio have a selection of unique boutiques to visit.
