Saunas
Saunas in Tahko and Kuopio
In Finland, there are an estimated one or two million saunas, many of which are located on the shores of the country’s many lakes and waterways. So, in the Capital of Lakeland, there are saunas almost everywhere; in hotels and restaurants, in private and rental cottages, in some hotel rooms and on the top of the ski slopes. And, of course, in the many spas in the area. A visit to Finland is really not complete without a visit to a traditional sauna.
In hotel accommodation, morning or evening saunas are usually included in the price of the room and in rental cottages the sauna can be heated when it’s best suited to you. If you do not have a sauna in your place of accommodation, or if you want to book a sauna privately for your party, you’ll have no trouble finding one to rent nearby.
A sauna in the midst of the most beautiful lakeland nature, and cooling down on the terrace after a steam, is an experience not to be missed. From many lakeside saunas you can even jump straight into the lake to swim. In the winter – if you’re brave enough (which you should be!) you can dip yourself in an icy water hole drilled into the lake.
In Kuopio, there is a huge smoke sauna in Rauhalahti Jätkänkämppä. Another magnificent smoke sauna is situated on the top of the Tahko ski resort’s slopes, at an altitude of about 300 meters above sea level and with a spectacular scenery over the lake Syväri. It’s called Mualiman Sauna, the sauna of the world.
